Spello, a little village in Umbria not far from the famous town of Assisi, is undoubtedly one of the region's most precious gems, and it is no coincidence that it belongs to the Borghi più belli d'Italia (the most beautiful villages in Italy). Spello stands on the slopes of Mount Subasio and is built entirely from the pinkish limestone of the mountain itself: as the sun goes down the entire hamlet gleams with an extraordinary color, a pink that gives a particular light to the houses clinging to the hillside, the roofs and the ancient walls.

Just a few steps away from the rental home is the main square of the village with all its services, the famous wine cellars, the shops selling typical products and plenty of restaurants at affordable prices. In the summer season guests have free access to the fine swimming pool of the Villa Roncalli hotel in Foligno, just 3 miles away. If you plan to have a car it is possible to park in a reserved area only 50 meters from the house (70 euros per week in 2010).

If you wish to journey beyond Umbria, from the train station in Spello you can reach Rome or Florence in 2 ½ hours. You will need to take a taxi to the train station because it is located at the base of the hill. There is also a larger train station in Foligno with more frequent lines.

Outside

Set in the old center of the village, inside the walls, this vacation home has been carved out of an ancient church and skillfully renovated by the owners, who have lengthy professional experience in welcoming their guests with consummate care. From a small street winding through the center of the village, a gate leads directly into the beautiful garden of the house, boasting a magnificent view over the hills and the plain stretched out in front. An ancient patio, equipped for eating in the open air, shady spots where guests can sit and read or rest, comfortable loungers for sunbathing. There is a small plunge pool in the garden (2.8m x 5m).

Inside

Garden level and first floor; 1,937 sq ft.
From the garden a path leads down to the Portico Antico, equipped for dining in the open air, and the panoramic garden. On the ground floor is a hall leading into a spacious kitchen with dining table (dishwasher, coffee machine and toaster), large sitting room with dining area, satellite TV and Bang & Olufsen Round System stereo for part of the house and the garden (access also from the portico). Also on the ground floor is a master bedroom with king size bed, TV, antique fireplace and picture windows. There is one bathroom with bathtub in Carrara marble, and one small bathroom with walk-in shower. On the first floor up the staircase is the study with sofa, a split-level bedroom with double futon bed for 2, TV and picture windows, and one bathroom with walk-in shower. On the ground floor, with access exclusively from the garden, is the third bedroom with queen size bed, TV and small open en-suite bathroom with walk-in shower.

Children over the age of 10 are welcome. The price includes housekeeping 2 hours per day, 6 days per week with daily change of bath linens. You will enjoy a complimentary welcome pack including fresh fruit, 1 bottle of olive oil, a bottle of wine and a bottle of mineral water. If you bring a laptop you may have unlimited DSL access for a fee (30 euros per week in 2010). On request and on payment you may arrange for additional housekeeping service, a local cook to prepare dinners, wine tasting, tours and cooking classes. Please inquire for details.
